Assumption Cathedral

Rebuilt neo-Russian cathedral whose blue and gold domes dominate central Omsk.

Assumption Cathedral is the most recognisable building in central Omsk. The original cathedral was destroyed in the Soviet anti-religious campaigns of the 1930s, and the present building was reconstructed in the 2000s.

Its blue walls and gold domes make it an easy landmark while walking the centre. The story is also a concise version of Russia's 20th-century religious history: demolition, absence, and post-Soviet rebuilding.
