Verkhniy Bor Hot Springs

The hot springs complex at Verkhniy Bor, about 30km northwest of Tyumen, is one of the most popular excursions from the city and draws visitors year-round. In winter, when temperatures can drop below minus 30°C, soaking in steaming outdoor thermal pools surrounded by snow and pine trees is an experience that is hard to replicate anywhere else.

Several sanatoriums and bathing complexes use the geothermal water, ranging from basic public pools to more comfortable resort facilities. The public pools are affordable and busy on weekends; the sanatorium facilities offer a more relaxed experience for a higher price. Taxis from Tyumen make the run regularly and the journey takes about 30–40 minutes. Bring a towel — rental is available but limited.

A story
The hot springs at Verkhniy Bor are fed by geothermal water from depths of 1,000–3,000 metres — the same geological formations that also produced Tyumen Oblast's vast oil reserves. The water is rich in minerals and reaches surface temperatures of around 36–42°C, and the spectacle of steaming outdoor pools surrounded by Siberian pine forest in mid-winter is genuinely surreal.
