Annunciation Cathedral

The Annunciation Cathedral dominates Voronezh's skyline with its white-and-gold exterior and 97-metre bell tower. Though a modern reconstruction (completed in 2009), it stands on the site of the original cathedral and is built to the same design, making it an important spiritual and architectural landmark in the city.

The interior is richly decorated with gilded iconostasis and murals covering the full surface of the dome. Sunday morning services are atmospheric, with choral singing that fills the large interior. The cathedral grounds offer good views back over the city centre.

A story
The original Annunciation Cathedral was demolished by the Soviets in 1932, its bell tower toppled and the site used for a cinema. The current cathedral is a faithful reconstruction completed in 2009, built to the same dimensions as the original 1718 structure. It is one of the tallest Orthodox churches in Russia, its bell tower rising to 97 metres.
