The large bronze monument to Peter the Great stands at the head of Sovetskaya Square in the city centre and is the most visible symbol of Voronezh's identity as the birthplace of the Russian Navy. Peter is depicted standing, looking south toward the Don.
It is worth pausing here to read the text on the plinth and understand the context: in 1696, this city on a steppe river was where Russia's entire military and industrial effort was focused for two years. The fleet built here changed the balance of power in the Black Sea region and set Russia on a path toward becoming a maritime empire.
