The Voronezh Reservoir, a 70-square-kilometre body of water created in 1972 by damming the Voronezh River, is the city's playground. In summer, sandy beaches along the banks fill up with locals; sailing clubs operate from several points; and the western shore has walking paths and picnic areas under the trees.
The reservoir is visible from much of the northern city, and the embankment road that runs alongside it is pleasant to walk in the evening. The water quality has improved significantly in recent decades, and swimming is now common at the main beaches near the dam. Boat trips operate in summer from the embankment near the city centre.
