Nové Mesto (New Town)

Nové Mesto is the 19th-century expansion district immediately north of Staré Mesto — a grid of wide streets and neo-classical apartment buildings that developed when the old city walls were demolished in the 1850s. The Grassalkovich Palace and the Presidential Gardens are the main sights, and the district has a calmer, more residential character than the old town.

Obchodná Street runs through the southern edge of Nové Mesto and is Bratislava's main commercial street — busy, slightly grubby, and entirely un-touristy. The Slovak Radio Building on Mýtna is a short detour. Horský Park, at the northern edge of the district, gives access to the walking trail up to Slavín.

Nové Mesto has a good selection of neighbourhood restaurants and cafes that cater primarily to residents rather than visitors — generally cheaper and more authentic than the old town alternatives.
