The Kremnica Mint is one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the world, founded in 1328 under the reign of the Hungarian king Charles Robert. Coins have been struck here through wars, plagues, regime changes, and the collapse of empires. Today it produces Slovak commemorative coins, medals, and official state tokens, and remains a working facility rather than a mere museum piece.
The attached Mint Museum walks you through seven centuries of monetary history, with displays of old coin dies, minting equipment, and a fine collection of historic coins and medals. The contrast between the medieval hand-hammering techniques and the precision machinery of today is striking. The highlight for many visitors is watching coins being struck live on antique presses — a process that connects you directly to the craftsmen who worked here in the 14th century.
