Alexander Dukhnovych Theater

The Alexander Dukhnovych Theater is the only professional theatre in Slovakia dedicated to Rusyn-language performance. That makes it more than an evening venue: it is one of the clearest public signs of the Rusyn culture rooted in this part of the Carpathians.

Even if you do not catch a show, note it while walking Hlavná ulica. Prešov's appeal lies partly in these cultural layers, and the theatre gives the city a sharper identity than a simple list of old churches would.

A story
The theatre is named for Alexander Dukhnovych, a 19th-century priest, writer, and cultural figure important to Rusyn identity. Its presence in Prešov is a reminder that eastern Slovakia is not culturally flat: Slovak, Rusyn, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Jewish, and German histories all overlap here.
