Church of St Andrew

The Church of St Andrew is the oldest building in Ružomberok town centre, with origins in 1318. After repeated modifications over the centuries — the result of fires, wars, and changing architectural fashions — it now presents a largely Baroque exterior that masks a considerably older structure. The interior retains Gothic elements alongside later Baroque decoration.

The church anchors the south end of Andrej Hlinka Square, the main public space of Ružomberok's compact centre. The square is named after the Slovak priest and nationalist leader Andrej Hlinka, who was born in the nearby village of Černová and whose confrontation with Hungarian authorities in 1907 resulted in the tragic Černová massacre. A statue of Hlinka stands on the square.

A story
The church was originally built in 1318 and has been rebuilt and modified repeatedly since — Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque layers accumulated over six centuries. A fire in 1761 prompted the most comprehensive reconstruction, which gave it its current appearance. The clock tower is the dominant feature of Andrej Hlinka Square.
