Likava Castle stands on a wooded rocky hilltop about 3 km north of Ružomberok, visible from the town and reached by a pleasant walk through the forest from the village of Likavka below. The ruins are substantial — two main towers still stand, along with sections of curtain wall — and the hilltop position over the Váh valley is spectacular. The castle dates to the late 13th century.
The walk from Likavka takes about 20-30 minutes each way on a clearly marked trail. There is nothing to stop you entering the ruins, and the climb through the remains of the gatehouse and into the courtyard is atmospheric. The view from the upper tower down the valley toward Ružomberok and the surrounding mountains is the best in the district.
