Vlkolínec UNESCO Village

Vlkolínec is a perfectly preserved village of traditional Slovak log houses perched on a hillside about 5 km south of Ružomberok town centre. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, it contains 45 wooden houses, a Roman Catholic church from 1875, a log belfry, and a communal well — the entire ensemble essentially unchanged since the 18th and 19th centuries.

The village is steep and the lanes are unpaved; it takes about an hour to walk through at a comfortable pace. There is a small permanent exhibition in one of the houses about the village's history and traditional way of life. Vlkolínec is the single most important sight in the Ružomberok area and should not be missed. It is reachable by local bus from Ružomberok or by a 45-minute walk uphill from the edge of town.

A story
Vlkolínec has been continuously inhabited since the 14th century and has changed remarkably little. Most of its 45 houses are still owned and lived in by local families — it is not an open-air museum but a functioning village. The UNESCO inscription in 1993 recognised it as the best-preserved cluster of traditional wooden folk architecture in central Europe.
