The Da Ponte Fountain stands on the Prešernov trg, a small square just outside the historic core of the old town near the Muda Gate. Built in 1666 by the podestà Leonardo da Ponte, it is an elegant Baroque piece — a hexagonal basin with a central pillar topped by a figure — and was for centuries one of the main freshwater sources for the island city.
The fountain stands near the Muda Gate, the last surviving city gate of Koper, which dates from 1516 and marks the historic southern entrance to the old town. Together the gate and the fountain define a transitional space between the old city proper and the newer parts of Koper built on reclaimed land.
The area around the fountain is less visited than Titov Trg and gives a quieter sense of the old town's edges. The Muda Gate can be passed through, and the inscription above it records the date of its construction.
