Slovenia

Compact Central European country of Alpine lakes, karst caves, vineyards, and a short Adriatic coast.

Slovenia is a small country that packs an extraordinary amount of diversity into its 20,000 square kilometers. Alpine peaks, turquoise lakes, underground caves, vineyards, and a short stretch of Adriatic coastline all lie within a couple of hours' drive of each other. It is one of Europe's most rewarding destinations, particularly for travelers who love the outdoors.

The Julian Alps dominate the northwest, with Bled and its fairytale island church as the postcard image. Nearby Lake Bohinj is quieter and wilder. Triglav National Park offers serious mountain hiking, while the Soca Valley around Bovec has some of the best whitewater rafting in Europe, in water so blue-green it looks artificial.

Ljubljana, the capital, is a compact, walkable city with a castle-topped hill, a river lined with cafes, and architecture by Joze Plecnik that gives it a distinctive character. It regularly appears on lists of Europe's most livable cities, and for good reason.

The Karst region in the southwest is where the word "karst" originated. Postojna Caves are the most visited cave system in Europe, and nearby Predjama Castle, built into a cliff face, looks like something from a film set. The short Adriatic coast around Piran has a Venetian character, with excellent seafood and Mediterranean warmth.

Slovenia is safe, clean, and well organized. The tap water is among the best in Europe. The people are friendly, the food is better than its reputation suggests, and the country offers outstanding value for what you get.
