Titov Trg

Titov Trg is the centrepiece of Koper's old town and one of the most beautiful town squares in Slovenia. It is surrounded on three sides by significant Gothic and Renaissance buildings, and the proportions are Venetian — long and relatively narrow, with a well at the centre. The whole space has the feeling of a campo transplanted from the Adriatic islands.

The dominant structure is the Praetorian Palace on the north side, a 15th-century Venetian Gothic building decorated with the symbols of Koper's mayors and the winged lion of Venice. Next to the cathedral stands the Bell Tower, which you can climb. Across the square, the Loggia Palace closes the east end.

The square is pedestrianised and becomes a social meeting point in the evenings, when locals gather under the stone arcades for coffee. It is a genuinely lived-in public space, not merely a tourist destination, which gives it a quality that many show squares in more popular destinations lack.

A story
Titov Trg stands on the site of the original island's central piazza — the heart of the city when Koper was surrounded by sea. During Venetian rule, the Doge appointed the local mayor (the *podestà*), who governed from the Praetorian Palace on this square. The palace still serves as the city hall, making this one of the few medieval civic squares in Europe where the original building still fulfils its original public function.
