Cathedral of St George

Hilltop cathedral with a Venetian-style bell tower and Adriatic panoramas

The Cathedral of St George crowns the highest point of the peninsula and has been the town's dominant landmark since the 16th century. The interior has a nave ceiling fresco worth stopping for, and the separate bell tower next door can be climbed for panoramic views over the Adriatic, the town's rooftops, and the Istrian coast stretching south into Croatia. The walk up from Tartini Square takes about ten minutes through steep, narrow lanes.

A story
The bell tower beside the cathedral is a conscious copy of the campanile in Venice's Piazza San Marco — a reminder that Piran was under Venetian rule for nearly five centuries. The Lion of St Mark carved above the town gate just below says the same thing in stone.
