Almerimar Marina

The marina at Almerimar is one of the larger yacht harbours on the Costa de Almería, with berths for several hundred boats and facilities that make it a serious stop for cruising yachts moving between Gibraltar and the Balearics. The harbour is calm, well-maintained, and serviced by a yacht club that has been operating long enough to have accumulated proper institutional knowledge about the local conditions.

For non-sailors, the marina strip is simply where Almerimar's evening life concentrates. The restaurants and bars around the harbour tend to be more reliable than those further back in the resort — the yacht crowd is not forgiving of bad seafood. Look for fresh local fish, particularly the garnet (a variety of sea bream), and the locally farmed mussels that appear on most menus. The esplanade around the harbour is a good place for an evening walk; the boats moored under the lights and the smell of the sea make the marina more atmospheric than the beach at night.

A story
Almerimar was designed from scratch as a marina town — the harbour was built first, and the resort grew around it. The result is a marina that is actually integrated into the town's life rather than bolted on as an afterthought, with bars and restaurants around the harbour that serve both boat crews and land-based visitors and operate with more consistency than most resort marina strips.
