Tholos de El Romeral

The Tholos de El Romeral is the third of Antequera's great megalithic monuments and the most structurally unusual. Unlike Menga and Viera, which are built with massive stone slabs, El Romeral uses small, carefully laid stones to create a corbelled vault — a dome built by overlapping horizontal courses of stone until they meet at the top. The result is a tholos tomb of the type more usually associated with Bronze Age Greece.

It stands about 3 km northeast of the others, a short drive or a long walk. The site is slightly less visited than the main park, which means you are more likely to have it to yourself.

A story
El Romeral was built around 1800 BCE using a completely different technology from Menga and Viera — small worked stones rather than giant slabs. The corbelled dome at the heart of the monument predates the Bronze Age by centuries and represents a level of engineering sophistication that was not recognised until the structure was properly excavated in 1903.
