La Maroma

La Maroma is the summit of the Sierra de Tejeda, rising to 2,069 metres above the Axarquía coast. It is the highest peak in Málaga province and the dominant feature of the landscape visible from the coast between Nerja and Torre del Mar. From the village of Canillas de Aceituno, the ascent takes around four hours at a steady pace via the main trail, which climbs through holm oak woodland, scrubland, and finally bare limestone to the summit cairn.

The views from the top extend in every direction: south to the Mediterranean and the Rif mountains of Morocco on clear days, north across the Andalusian interior to the Sierra Nevada. The route requires no special equipment outside of winter, but good boots are essential — the upper section is rocky and exposed. In winter the summit and upper slopes are often snow-covered and crampons may be needed.

A story
La Maroma is the highest point in Málaga province and — remarkably for the Costa del Sol's hinterland — receives regular snowfall in winter. On certain winter days you can stand on the beach at Nerja and see the white summit directly above you, only 20 km inland.
