Getting Around

Buses are the backbone of Andalucian transport and connect cities, towns and villages far more comprehensively than the rail network. The main train lines — linking Málaga, Algeciras, Córdoba and Granada — are scenic and worth taking for their own sake, but for flexibility buses win. Most inter-city routes run frequently and cheaply, and the major bus stations in Seville, Málaga and Granada are well-organised.

Renting a car is the only practical way to explore the white villages and rural interior. Roads through the sierras are narrow but well-maintained, and driving through the Serranía de Ronda or along the coast between Tarifa and Cádiz ranks among the best road trips in southern Europe.
