Campo de Gibraltar

Southern Andalusian region where cork forests, ferry ports, and Atlantic beaches face the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Campo de Gibraltar is the southernmost region of Andalucía, where Europe almost touches Africa. The capital is Algeciras, an industrial city with the second-busiest port in Europe and the gateway to Morocco by ferry.

The northern part of the region is covered in dense cork oak forests where it rains far more than you would expect this far south, with beautiful white towns like Jimena de la Frontera, Grazalema, and Alcalá de los Gazules tucked into the hills. The coast offers long, fine golden sand beaches: Bolonia Beach has Roman ruins right on the sand, Tarifa is a world-class destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and Zahara de los Atunes is a former tuna-fishing village that has kept its character.

On the bay of Algeciras sit the towns of Los Barrios, San Roque, and La Línea de la Concepción. At the southern tip of La Línea stands Gibraltar, the British overseas territory claimed by Spain since it was taken in 1704. Following the coast north from the bay, you reach Sotogrande, an exclusive enclave of golf courses and luxury villas.
