Pyrenees Hiking

Jaca is the main services hub for the western Aragonese Pyrenees, and the hiking within reach of the town is as good as any in the range. The valleys of Hecho and Ansó, accessible by bus in the evenings and returning in the mornings, offer dramatic gorge scenery and trails through beech and fir forests to high mountain terrain. For those with a car, the options multiply dramatically: Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park is about an hour away, with some of the most spectacular canyon walking in Europe.

The Camino Aragonés passes through Jaca itself, and walking sections of it — particularly the stage east towards Huesca, or west towards the Somport Pass into France — gives a sense of the medieval pilgrimage route and the landscapes it crosses. The tourist office in Jaca has good information on local trails and current conditions; in winter many mountain routes require experience and equipment, but the valley paths remain accessible.
