Plaza de la Villa is the main square of Sos del Rey Católico, arcaded on its lower sides with the town hall — a handsome Renaissance building — closing one end. The square functions as the social centre of the village and in summer becomes a terrace for the few bars and restaurants that keep the town fed.
The arcades, built from the same pale yellow stone as everything else in Sos, cast good shade in the afternoon and give the square a medieval atmosphere that is entirely unforced. This is not a reconstructed or restored historic centre — the square looks like this because nobody ever had reason or money to change it. Sitting at one of the café tables here with a glass of local wine is one of the simpler pleasures of the region.
