Basílica of Santa Engracia

Zaragoza basilica with a Plateresque façade and early Christian sarcophagi in the crypt.

The Basílica of Santa Engracia is easy to miss if you are moving only between Zaragoza’s headline monuments, but it rewards a slower circuit of the centre. Its ornate Plateresque façade is the great survivor of a much larger monastery, badly damaged during the sieges of Zaragoza.

The crypt is the reason to go inside. It preserves the memory of Zaragoza’s early Christian martyrs and includes carved 4th-century sarcophagi, giving the church a historical depth that contrasts with the busier grandeur of El Pilar and La Seo.
