Corias Monastery, formally San Juan Bautista de Corias, stands two kilometres from Cangas del Narcea on the bank of the Narcea River. Founded in the 11th century and rebuilt on a grand scale after an 18th-century fire, it is often called the Asturian Escorial for its sober size and symmetry.
Part of the complex now operates as a parador, but the building remains the area's strongest architectural sight. Look for the monumental facade, the church, and the archaeological remains of the earlier monastery preserved below.
