Bars and Cafes

Formentera is not Ibiza — there are no superclubs, no international DJs playing until sunrise, and no strip of venues competing for the loudest sound system. What you get instead is something more agreeable: beach bars that serve cold drinks at sunset, a few village bars where locals actually drink, and one or two places with a genuine music identity of their own.

The defining Formentera bar experience is the sunset ritual. The island's west-facing beaches and the long spit of Ses Illetes offer clear views of the sun dropping into the sea, and a culture has developed around watching it happen with a drink in hand. Blue Bar on Platja de Migjorn has been doing this longest and most deliberately, with a chill-out soundtrack that has earned it a quiet reputation beyond the island. In Sant Francesc and Sant Ferran, village bars open in the evening and stay open late without making much noise about it. The nightlife, such as it is, tends to be unhurried and ends well before dawn.
