Blue Bar

The island's legendary sunset beach bar on Platja de Migjorn, with chill-out music and sea views

Blue Bar has been operating on Platja de Migjorn long enough to have accumulated a genuine reputation rather than just a social media one. The formula is not complicated: a simple wooden structure on the beach, cold drinks, and a sound system playing ambient and chill-out music as the sun drops toward the horizon. What makes it work is the setting — Migjorn faces west, giving clear sightlines to the sunset, and the bar is positioned to take full advantage of this fact.

The ritual of arriving around 6pm, claiming a spot on the sand or the terrace, ordering something cold, and watching the light change is one of Formentera's better experiences. It is not sophisticated in any way, and that is precisely the point. The music is consistent with the mood without overwhelming it. In high summer the bar fills up, but it remains more relaxed than most Ibiza beach clubs — louder, possibly, than you might expect, but not enough to ruin the conversation. It is a Formentera institution in the way that only places that earn rather than manufacture their status can be.
