Palma Nova

Palma Nova sits immediately north of Magaluf and has a very different atmosphere despite being only a kilometre away. The beach here is broader and less crowded, the hotels tend to be a step up in quality, and the nightlife is considerably calmer. It is a good option for those who want to base themselves near Magaluf's beach without being directly in the resort.

The seafront promenade connects Palma Nova to Magaluf and is pleasant to walk — it runs along the top of the low sea wall with views over the bay. There are good beach clubs along the Palma Nova waterfront and a marina at the northern end. The town is also the departure point for boat trips into the bay and along the coast toward Andratx.

A story
Palma Nova was built from scratch in the 1960s as a planned resort — one of the first in the Balearics specifically designed for mass tourism. The town planners kept cars separate from the seafront, which is why the promenade here is wider and more walkable than in Magaluf, whose seafront was retrofitted after the fact.
