The Coves dels Hams sit about a kilometre west of Porto Cristo on the road towards Manacor, and they make a worthwhile alternative — or addition — to the famous Coves del Drac. Where the Drac is large, dramatic and draws enormous coach-party crowds, the Hams are smaller and more intimate, with fewer visitors and a slightly more personal experience. The name comes from the fishhook shape of some of the formations: slim, curved stalactites hanging from the ceiling like a catch waiting to be made.
The caves also have an underground lake — the Venice Sea — where classical music concerts are performed on small boats, following a tradition similar to the Drac. The tour includes a short boat crossing of the lake, and the overall circuit takes around 45 minutes. If you are visiting in peak season and have already had your fill of crowds at the Drac, the Hams offer the same geological spectacle with a fraction of the queuing.
