Palau del Rei Sanxo

The Palau del Rei Sanxo, the royal palace that preceded the monastery, sits just beside the Carthusian complex and is included in the combined entry ticket. The medieval hall where concerts are held retains its original vaulted stone ceiling and is intimate enough that the music fills it completely.

The palace dates from 1310, built for King Sancho I of Majorca, who spent his summers here in the cooler mountain air to help with his asthma. The combination of medieval architecture, mountain views, and live Chopin makes for an experience that most visitors remember as the highlight of their time in Valldemossa.

A story
Chopin recitals are performed here on the hour throughout the day, using a period piano, in a small palace room that looks straight out across the valley. If you happen to be the only visitor — which is quite possible outside summer — you get a private concert in one of the most atmospheric rooms in Mallorca.
