El Toro (Monte Toro)

Monte Toro is the highest point on Menorca at 358 metres — modest by mainland standards but, on an island that is entirely flat except for this peak, sufficient to provide views in every direction. On a clear day you can see the entire island and, in exceptional visibility, the other Balearic islands and the Catalan coast. The summit is reached by a road from Es Mercadal and is visited by a steady stream of pilgrims and tourists.

At the top, an Augustinian convent has occupied the summit since the 17th century. The attached church contains the image of the Verge del Toro. The views from the terrace are expansive: the south coast beaches, the Fornells bay to the north, and the distant outline of Mallorca on clear days. There is a cafe and souvenir shop. The ascent takes about 20 minutes by car from Es Mercadal; a footpath from the village is also possible.

A story
Monte Toro has been a place of pilgrimage since the 13th century, when legend holds that a bull led Augustinian monks to a hidden image of the Virgin in the rocks — hence the name, "El Toro" (the bull). The statue they supposedly found, the Verge del Toro, is venerated as the patroness of Menorca and is kept in the sanctuary at the summit. Whether or not the story is true, the peak has been a centre of Menorcan religious life for over 700 years.
