Naveta des Tudons

The Naveta des Tudons is the best-preserved prehistoric funerary monument in the Balearic Islands — an upturned boat-shaped stone tomb built by the Talayotic culture around 1000 BCE. The structure stands about four metres tall and has a distinctive elongated shape: a rounded end facing west and a more vertical facade at the east with a low entrance doorway. It was used as a communal burial chamber over several centuries.

The naveta sits in a field just off the main road between Ciutadella and Ferreries, easily visited as a stop on the way across the island. The surrounding landscape of dry-stone walls, holm oaks, and farmland hasn't changed much since the monument was built. You can enter the small chamber through the low doorway, though standing upright inside is difficult. The site is one of the most visited prehistoric monuments in the Balearics.

A story
The naveta des Tudons was rediscovered in the 1950s and excavated in 1959. Inside the funerary chamber, archaeologists found the skeletal remains of more than a hundred individuals, jumbled together with bronze bracelets, ceramic vessels, and bone buttons. The bodies had been placed in the chamber over several centuries, with older remains pushed aside to make room for new arrivals — a collective ancestor vault that the community used for perhaps 500 years.
