Gros is the neighbourhood on the eastern bank of the Urumea river, backing Playa de la Zurriola. It has a distinctly different character from the old town: younger, more residential, with a strong surf culture and pintxo bars that cater more to locals than tourists. The streets are broader and the buildings are more modern, dating mostly from the late 19th and early 20th century.
The bars on Calle de Zabaleta and the streets around it are excellent — good-quality pintxos at prices noticeably lower than the Parte Vieja, and a clientele that is mostly local. The Kursaal sits at the western edge of Gros, and the beach is right there. For a morning or evening out away from the tourist circuit, Gros is the neighbourhood to head to.
