Castillo de Enrique II

The castle of Enrique II stands at the western edge of the old town, built in the 14th century on a site overlooking the Río Águeda. It is one of the better-preserved examples of medieval castle architecture in western Castile, with thick square towers and a commanding position on the city walls.

The building now serves as a parador — one of Spain's state-owned luxury hotels — which means the interior is only accessible to guests, but the exterior can be viewed from the walls and from the gardens on the river side. The setting, with the castle rising above the old ramparts and the river glinting below, is one of the most photogenic views in the city.

Even if you are not staying here, the terrace bar is sometimes accessible and the approach along the walls gives good views of the castle from the outside.
