Bodega Palacio de Arganza

An 18th-century stone palace winery producing Mencía reds since 1805, with tastings

The Bodega Palacio de Arganza occupies a beautiful 18th-century stone palace on the edge of town, its archways and courtyard worn smooth with two centuries of use. The winery has been in continuous production since 1805, making it one of the oldest in El Bierzo, and has watched the region's reputation transform from local curiosity to one of Spain's more talked-about appellations. The Denominación de Origen El Bierzo covers a confined mountain-ringed basin with distinctive schist soils that give the wines an intensity and freshness unusual for Castile and León.

The grape is Mencía, a variety that produces reds with deep colour, lively acidity, and a floral lift that draws comparisons to Pinot Noir — though Mencía has its own distinctive character, earthier and darker-fruited than that description suggests. Tastings at the bodega are a straightforward pleasure: a glass or two of good wine in a historic setting, without the ceremony of a major wine destination. If you are walking the Camino, this is an excellent place to pause for an afternoon before tackling the stage to O Cebreiro.
