About 3 km northeast of town, the ruins of a 4th-century Roman dam sit beside the dry riverbed of the Amarguillo. Built during the late Empire to provide water for the colony of Consaburum, the dam was one of the largest of its kind in Hispania — and when it finally collapsed in a great winter flood in 1891 it killed 357 people in the town downstream.
The site is unfenced and rarely visited; a short walk along farm tracks brings you to a long section of Roman concrete and buttress towers, lying among scrub and wildflowers. Atmospheric and slightly melancholy. Bring water and a hat — the plain offers no shade.
