Three kilometres from Oropesa, the village of Lagartera is famous across Spain for a distinctive style of traditional embroidery — geometric patterns of red, blue, and black stitching on white linen, still made by hand in the village. The craft has been practised here for centuries and the designs are unlike those found elsewhere in Castile.
A small museum in the village displays historic pieces alongside the costumes worn for local festivals; on weekdays you can sometimes see women working at frames in their doorways. Several shops sell modern pieces alongside originals — the quality varies widely, so look carefully before buying. If you are in the area in early September, the town's festival fills the streets with people in full traditional dress. It is a remarkable sight.
