Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción

The parish church of Oropesa, built in the 16th century, stands just below the castle complex on the Plaza de la Constitución. It is a solid Castilian Gothic structure with a nave and side chapels added progressively over two centuries. The tower is a local landmark — you can see it from the road long before you reach the town.

Inside, the carved retablo (altarpiece) behind the main altar is the highlight, with polychrome sculptures depicting the Assumption of the Virgin. The church is normally open for morning mass and at weekends; the sacristy sometimes has information about the town's history. Ask in the café opposite if you find it locked — a key is usually available.
