Convento de la Concepción Franciscana

The Convento de la Concepción is a former Franciscan convent founded in the early seventeenth century on what was then the western edge of town. The church is open for services and is the more rewarding part to visit: a long single nave, painted vaults and a Baroque main retablo carved by local craftsmen.

The cloister, when accessible, gives a good sense of how the convent organised its life around prayer and small-scale farming. Like much of inland Castile, the convent was secularised in the nineteenth century and only partly reactivated; only a handful of sisters live in the modern wing today.
