Palacio del Duque de Riánsares

The Palacio del Duque de Riánsares is the neoclassical urban palace built in the 1840s for Agustín Muñoz, the morganatic husband of Spain's regent queen María Cristina, who was made Duke of Riánsares as part of the long, scandalous attempt to legitimize their marriage. The façade is a calm composition of three storeys with a balcony of wrought iron over the main doorway.

The building now houses the town's cultural offices and a small exhibition space. It is not always open, but the exterior is the main attraction in any case and is a few minutes' walk from the Plaza Mayor.

A story
The palace was built for Agustín Fernando Muñoz, the royal guardsman who in 1833 secretly married the widowed queen Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies — and was given the title Duke of Riánsares as part of her attempt to legitimize the match. Their descendants, the Riánsares family, kept the palace in Tarancón until well into the twentieth century.
