Casa Garriga i Nogués (Can Garí)

Puig i Cadafalch summer house, a Modernista landmark

The architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch — author of the Casa Amatller and the Casa de les Punxes in Barcelona — designed several of Argentona's most striking buildings, of which Can Garí (also called Casa Garriga i Nogués) is the best preserved. Built in 1898 as a summer residence for the banker Rupert Garí, it has the asymmetric silhouette, polychrome ceramic tiles, and gothic-revival flourishes that mark Puig's mature work.

The house is private and can only be admired from the street, but a slow walk through the Sant Miquel del Cros and Plaça Nova quarters takes in half a dozen other turn-of-the-century summer villas built by Catalan bankers and industrialists between roughly 1880 and 1920 — a small-town counterpoint to the Eixample in Barcelona.
