Font Picant

The 19th-century mineral spring that drew Barcelona's bourgeoisie

The Font Picant — literally the "sharp" or "spicy" spring — is the carbonated mineral source that put Argentona on the map. From the mid-19th century, Barcelona's bourgeoisie travelled out by carriage and later by train to take its slightly metallic, naturally sparkling water, and the town built itself a small summer-villa quarter to accommodate them.

The spring still flows from a small Modernista pavilion in a shaded park on the edge of the old town, and locals queue up at weekends to fill plastic bottles. The water has a distinct mineral tang — drinkable, though more of a curiosity than a treat. The surrounding park is a pleasant ten-minute walk from the central square.
