Sant Pere de Porqueres

The Romanesque church of Sant Pere de Porqueres stands at the southern end of the lake in the small municipality of Porqueres, about 2 km from Banyoles town. Built in the 11th century, it is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in the Girona region — small, severe, and perfectly proportioned, with an apse that appears to grow directly from the lakeside rock.

The church is consecrated and still used for occasional services, which means it is not always open to visitors. The best time to visit is Sunday morning, when it is typically open after mass. The lakeside setting, with the water just below and the mountains behind, is exceptional.

The walk from Banyoles along the lake path to Porqueres takes about 30 minutes and is a good reason to extend a visit to the lake beyond the main promenade.
