The Basílica de Santa Maria is Mataró's principal church and the focal point of the old town. Construction began in the sixteenth century and continued well into the eighteenth, leaving a Baroque interior of considerable scale — broad nave, painted vaults, and an ornate high altar. The building was declared a cultural asset of national interest.
The church sits on the Plaça de Santa Maria, the main square of the historic centre, surrounded by the pedestrianised streets of the old town. The square fills with café tables in summer and is a natural gathering point at any time of day. The interior is free to enter and worth the few minutes it takes to look up at the nave.
