Roman Villa of Can Llauder

The Roman Villa of Can Llauder is one of the best-preserved Roman sites in Catalonia. The villa dates from the first century AD and was the centre of a prosperous agricultural estate — the Roman town of Iluro (modern Mataró) was the administrative heart of the Maresme coast, and wealthy Romans built extensively here.

The highlight is the mosaic floors in the reception rooms, which have survived with their geometric and figurative patterns largely intact. The site museum provides context on the villa's layout and the Roman occupation of the Maresme, with finds recovered during excavation. The site is managed by the Mataró Museum.

Address: Carrer de Lepant, Mataró
Hours: Tuesday–Saturday 10am–1:30pm; closed Monday

A story
The mosaic floors at Can Llauder were discovered not by archaeologists but by a farmer ploughing his field in the 1950s. The find revealed that Iluro, modest as it appears today, was home to Roman landowners wealthy enough to commission floor art that rivals anything found in Italy.
