Casa Navàs

Casa Navàs is the finest Modernista building in Reus, and one of the best-preserved examples of the style anywhere in Catalonia. Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner — the architect also responsible for the Hospital de Sant Pau and the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona — it stands on the corner of the Plaça del Mercadal and was built between 1901 and 1908 for the textile merchant Joaquim Navàs.

What makes the house exceptional is that the original interior is intact. The furniture, ceramics, mosaics, painted ceilings, stained glass, and custom metalwork are all still in place, designed as a unified whole under Domènech i Montaner's direction. The natural light that fills the main rooms is generous. Guided tours run on certain days and are the only way to see the interior — check the Gaudí Centre for current schedules.

A story
Casa Navàs was designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner between 1901 and 1908. The building once had a tower on its left side, which was destroyed by bombing during the Spanish Civil War and never rebuilt. Everything else — the furniture, ceramics, mosaics, stained glass, and metalwork — survives exactly as the architect intended, making it one of the most complete Modernista interiors in existence.
