Old Town and Arcades

Medieval stone arcades built to shelter from Galicia's persistent rain

Noia's historic centre is a compact grid of medieval streets lined with soportales — the stone-arched arcades that are a Galician speciality and a practical solution to the near-constant rain. Rúa do Comercio and the streets around the main square are the most atmospheric. The 15th-century church of San Martiño, with its carved west portal, anchors the upper part of the old town. Wandering without a plan is the right approach.
