Baiona

Historic port where Columbus's news of America first reached Europe

Baiona, on the southern shore of the Ría de Vigo, is one of the most attractive small towns in the Rías Baixas. The old town is a tangle of granite arcades, fish restaurants, and small squares; above it stands the medieval fortress of Monterreal, now converted into a parador hotel, with a long fortified perimeter you can walk for the views.

The town's claim to fame is its role in the Columbus story: the Pinta docked here in 1493 with the first news of America, and a moored replica still recalls the moment. Beyond the history, Baiona is a working port with a strong sailing culture and excellent seafood — order percebes (gooseneck barnacles) and Albariño, sit on the harbour wall, and enjoy.

A story
On 1 March 1493 the caravel Pinta limped into Baiona harbour with the first news of Columbus's discovery — beating the Niña to Lisbon by a few days and making this small Galician port the first place in Europe to learn of the New World. A replica of the Pinta is moored permanently in the harbour.
