Combarro

Storybook fishing village of waterfront hórreos and stone cottages

Combarro is the most photographed village in the Rías Baixas, and once you see it you understand why. A line of granite hórreos — the distinctive raised granaries of Galicia — stands directly above the water, with a tangle of narrow lanes, low stone cottages, and a small fishing port behind them. The village is tiny and easily covered on foot in an hour.

Come early or late to avoid the daytime tour buses. Sunset, when the hórreos silhouette against the ria, is the iconic moment. A handful of waterside seafood restaurants make a meal here an easy decision.

A story
The 30 hórreos at Combarro — raised stone granaries with pitched roofs and carved crosses — were built so close to the water that fishermen could load their catch directly into them at high tide. A few are still owned by the same families who built them more than two centuries ago.
