Sil Canyon Catamaran

The classic way to see the Sil canyon — a boat trip through one of Spain's most dramatic gorges

The catamaran trip through the Sil canyon is the defining experience of the Ribeira Sacra. The boat departs from the Embalse de San Estevo dam and travels the length of the most dramatic section of the gorge, where sheer walls drop 500 metres to green water and the terraced vineyards cling to angles that look impossible for cultivation. Monasteries appear on the heights above: Santo Estevo, now converted to a parador, and Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil are the most prominent.

Trips typically last around two hours each way and run from spring through autumn. The morning light is better for photography on the western wall; afternoon trips catch the terrace vineyards in golden light from the east. Book ahead in summer. Boats depart from Os Peares or from the jetty near the Monastery of San Estevo — check with the operator for current departure points.

A story
The canyon walls here plunge over 500 metres to the river. The Roman legions who marched through this terrain in the 1st century AD found the gorge so impenetrable that they built their road on the high rim above — the Via Nova, still traceable in parts. The monks who later built their monasteries on the high ground did so partly for the same reason: the gorge was a natural barrier that kept the world out.
