Montgó Natural Park

Limestone massif rising behind Dénia with hiking trails and cave art

The Montgó massif rises to 753 metres directly behind Dénia and dominates the view from the town and the coast for miles around. The Parc Natural del Montgó protects the mountain and its surroundings, where the vegetation shifts from Mediterranean scrub at lower altitudes to dramatic cliff faces and open summit terrain at the top. The caves on the northern face contain prehistoric cave paintings.

Several marked trails lead up from both the Dénia and Jávea sides of the mountain. The main summit route takes around three hours from the Dénia trailhead (allow the same for the descent). The summit rewards with views stretching along the Costa Blanca from Cap de Sant Antoni south to the Peñón de Ifach at Calpe, and on clear days across to Ibiza. The mountain is best attempted in spring or autumn; midsummer heat makes the climb demanding.
